General Position Summary

A School Counselor plays a vital role in fostering students' academic, career, and personal/social development. Through leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, they implement a comprehensive counseling program to ensure student success and well-being. This role is essential for creating a supportive school culture that promotes student achievement, emotional resilience, and readiness for life beyond school. The School Counselor Position may involve exposure to challenging situations requiring crisis management.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Development and Management of Counseling Programs:

    • Design and maintain a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with Nevada state standards.

    • Use data to evaluate the program's effectiveness and impact on school goals.

    • Communicate program goals to stakeholders (students, parents, staff, and community members).

  • Student Support Services:

    • Provide individual and group counseling to address academic, social, or emotional concerns.

    • Assist students in developing academic plans, career goals, and personal growth strategies.

    • Offer crisis intervention and preventive counseling services.

    • Refer students to external mental health resources when necessary.

  • Academic and Career Guidance:

    • Help students navigate course selection, graduation requirements, and postsecondary planning.

    • Conduct workshops on college applications, scholarships, and career readiness.

    • Administer aptitude tests and interpret results to guide students in their academic and career decisions.

  • Collaboration and Advocacy:

    • Work closely with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners to support student success.

    • Advocate for equity and access to opportunities for all students.

    • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as needed.

  • Program Delivery:

    • Conduct classroom guidance lessons on topics like bullying prevention, time management, or interpersonal skills.

    • Organize peer mentoring programs and other student development initiatives.

    • Facilitate drug/alcohol prevention programs.

  • Administrative Duties:

    • Maintain confidentiality of student records.

    • Manage registration processes and student scheduling.

    • Regularly update counseling plans based on school needs.

Required Skills

  • Leadership and advocacy capabilities.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.

  • Knowledge of developmental psychology and counseling techniques.

Required Experience and/or Education

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field.

  • Nevada State certification/licensure as a School Counselor.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with diverse groups.

  • Previous experience in educational settings is preferred.
